Paediatric Intensive Care Society Study Group (PICS-SG)
The PICS Study Group is an informal multi-disciplinary association of PICS members interested in research. Anyone is welcome to contribute or attend meetings.
PICS-SG aims to facilitate research into critical illness in children by:
- acting as a forum for PIC staff to present outline plans for research projects/trials for informal peer review and supportive comment,
- encouraging and facilitating collaboration between group members with common research interests
- considering feasibility of proposals for collaborative interventional trials
How Does it Work?
These aims are supported by group meetings but also by a network of research active or interested intensive care staff maintained by the Study Group chair.
The PICS-SG Chair (currently Mark Peters from GOSH) is available as a point of contact for researchers seeking collaborations amongst UK and Ireland PICS members and Units.
PICS-SG members have organised themselves into sub-groups to work around specific areas of study or specific projects.Currently active examples include:
| Sepsis Group | |
| Nursing group | Lyvonne Tume |
| Traumatic Brain Injury | Kevin Morris or Mark Peters |
| Ethics and Law | Joe Brierley |
| Cardiac Intensive Care | Duncan Macrae |
| Renal Group | Claire Westrope |
The Chair considers requests for PICANet data on behalf of the PICANET steering group.
PICS members planning survey of practice studies are strongly encouraged to approach the PICS-SG chair with a draft survey or questionnaire. The aim is to manage requests for information to units at a reasonable number, but also to avoid overlapping surveys or those with methodological limitations. The result should be much higher return rates on those that are circulated under the auspices of PICS-SG.
Meetings
The group typically meets twice a year: as a one day stand-alone Spring Meeting and as a session within the PICS Annual Meeting (this year 21st September 2011 in Cambridge).
Current Studies
The inaugural meeting was in Cambridge in 2005 with Robert Tasker as chair. From that meeting work collaborations were formed that have resulted in the current programme of PIC multiple centre randomised controlled trials.
