PICS Research and Travel Awards Statutes
The Paediatric Intensive Care Society provides a maximum of £5,000 each year to support research and travel awards.
Paediatric Intensive Care Society Research Awards
Research projects in either basic science or clinical research in a field relevant to paediatric intensive care may be supported. Research intended to allow acquisition of data to support a larger scale research grant application are encouraged. Research awards will usually be a maximum of £2000 to allow two projects to be supported each year.
Applicants
- At least one of the applicants must be a member of PICS
- The principal applicant should be a clinician, nurse or member of another clinical discipline currently practicing in paediatric intensive care in the United Kingdom or Ireland.
The Project
- Must be relevant to the practice of paediatric intensive care
- Should be novel in its scope or represent a significant development in clinical or scientific research
Application for grants
- Applications for grants should be in the range of £1000 to £2000
- The grant will be awarded for a two year period
- The grant will be awarded through the hospital or institution sponsoring the research
- The grant will be advertised on the PICS website, by annual direct mailing and at the PICS annual conference
- Application forms can be obtained from the Education and Science Committee of PICS or downloaded from the PICS website
- Applications should be sent to the Education and Science Committee by the 1st of February each year.
- Applications will be administered by the Education and Science Committee of PICS and reviewed by a panel composed of representatives from the Education and Science Committee, PICS Study Group and at least two independent reviewers.
- The applicant will be informed of the outcome of their application by the end of April.
- The project must be commenced within 6 months of the award date (or all monies must be refunded)
- A final report must be submitted to the PICS Education and Science Committee within 6 months of the end date of the award
- It is a requirement that the results be presented at the PICS annual congress.
Evaluation of the project
Applications are evaluated on the basis of the following criteria:
- Curriculum vitae of applicant
- Originality of the project
- Importance of the work
- Methodology
- Quality of application
Priority will be given to pilot clinical work intended as a preliminary step towards a research training fellowship application or a larger clinical study.
Priority will be given to projects in areas highlighted as research priorities by the PICS-SG or the APA

Paediatric Intensive Care Society Travel Award
PICS will also consider applications for an annual travel award. The award will be to a maximum of £1000 to allow the applicant to undertake overseas travel to allow them to acquire clinical or scientific skills that cannot be obtained in the United Kingdom. The skills must be relevant to the practice of or research into paediatric intensive care. Applicants must demonstrate that the skills developed will allow the development of a significant quality improvement in local or national PICU practice or will facilitate novel clinical research.

Application for travel awards
- Applications for awards should be in the range of £500-1000
- The awards will be advertised on the PICS website, by annual direct mailing and at the PICS annual conference
- Application forms can be obtained from the Education and Science Committee of PICS or downloaded from the PICS website
- Applications should be sent to the Education and Science Committee by the 1st of February each year.
- Applications will be administered by the Education and Science Committee of PICS
- The applicant will be informed of the outcome of their application by the end of April.
- The travel must be completed within 12 months of the award date (or all monies must be refunded)
- Agreed funds will be paid to the applicant at the end of the period of travel upon production of the relevant receipts
- A final report must be submitted to the PICS Education and Science Committee within 6 months of completion of travel
- It is a requirement that the results be presented at the PICS annual congress.
- The allocation of funding will be reviewed annually by PICS Council and confirmed at the AGM. The allocation of funding to research or travel awards will be at the discretion of the Education and Science Committee and will be dependent on approval of the review committee.
